Alumni Volunteer Opportunities at Commencement 

Help us welcome the newest members of the Oakland University Alumni Family by volunteering at commencement! Listed below are various alumni volunteer opportunities available at each ceremony. Ceremony length varies based on the number of graduates, but typically lasts approximately two hours.

Greeter: Duties include handing out programs and assisting guests upon arrival, as well as assisting to clear the O’rena at the end of the ceremony. Volunteer time commitment is 90 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony until approximately 30 minutes after the ceremony has concluded. During the ceremony, a hospitality area is available with refreshments for all volunteers.

Student Usher: Duties include ensuring that students stay in a double file line as they leave the pre-ceremony staging area and enter into the O'rena. Student ushers may also provide directions to students on how to fill out the back of their registration cards, as well as assist students with regalia. Volunteer shift time is 90 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony until students have entered the O’rena.

Wheel Chair Host: Duties include escorting guests to their seats in wheelchairs, as needed, and returning the wheelchair to the appropriate location, both before and after the ceremony. Volunteer shift time is 90 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony until approximately 30 minutes after the ceremony has concluded.

Hearing Device Distribution: Duties include providing hearing devices to guests in need and ensuring that they are returned at the end of each ceremony. Volunteer shift time is 90 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony until approximately 30 minutes after the ceremony has concluded.
