Each award offered through the OUAA has unique eligibility criteria.

Legacy students, defined as individuals whose parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt or uncle received a degree or academic certificate from OU, may be eligible to apply for the OUAA's Legacy Award or Legacy Transfer Award.

Current OU upperclassmen in either the School of Business Administration or the School of Engineering and Computer Science may be eligible to apply for the Frances C. Amos School of Business Administration Alumni Affiliate Award or the Thomas A. Yatooma  School of Engineering and Computer Science Alumni Memorial Award. Legacy status is not required to be eligible for these awards.

Alumni returning to OU to complete a graduate degree may be eligible for the Returning Alumni Award.

Please see the specific eligibility criteria for each award, as well as deadlines for application materials, by clicking the Scholarships tab above.

Previous OUAA scholarship recipients are ineligible to apply again. OUAA scholarships are merit-based, not need-based, and are intended to cover "cost of attendance". Recipients are selected by an alumni committee. Students must be admitted to OU at the time of selection.

Who should I ask to write my letters of recommendation?
Select two individuals to provide letters of recommendation. Current high school seniors applying for a Legacy Award are highly encouraged to provide at least one letter from a high school teacher. Current OU students are highly encouraged to provide at least one letter from an OU faculty member. Transfer students may use a faculty member from the previous institution.

What information should be included in my letter of recommendation?
An individual who is asked to provide a letter of recommendation for a scholarship applicant is strongly encouraged to highlight why the student is the best candidate for the award. Letters should not simply recite merit. What makes this student unique? In addition to strong academic performance, what other qualities can you highlight to push this student's application to the top?

The application states to submit two letters of recommendation. If I send more than two, will that be viewed more favorably by the selection committee?
Only two letters of recommendation will be considered for each applicant. Choose the supporting documentation that best represents you to the selection committee.

How should I package my application?
Do not use special packaging such as notebooks, sheet protectors, title pages, special bindings, or any other items to organize or market your application. Paper clips are preferred over staples. The materials need to be presented with minimal distraction as the documents are scanned for electronic distribution to the selection committee.

I am an international student. Can I still apply for an OUAA scholarship?
Yes, as long as you meet all other criteria.

When will the applications be available?
Applications are available online in writable pdf format at the start of the fall semester each year. Visit our scholarship webpage for more information.

          Are the OUAA scholarships renewable?
The Legacy and Legacy Transfer Awards are renewable, provided the recipients meets the stated renewal criteria (see the Renewal Criteria tab above.) The Amos (SBA), Yatooma (SECS) and Returning Alumni Awards are non-renewable

How do I know if I am a Legacy student?
A legacy student is defined as an individual whose parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt or uncle received a degree or academic certificate from OU

Can my scholarship be used towards the spring/summer semester?
No, all OUAA scholarships are distributed over the fall and winter semesters.

I only have one semester remaining in my OU degree program. Can I still be considered for the award?
Yes, however, should you be selected, your award would only be distributed in the amount for one semester. In other words, you would receive half of the award. Note: this applies only to current OU students, not to Legacy or Legacy Transfer applicants.

When will I know if I am selected to receive a scholarship?
Recipients of the Legacy Award will be notified by phone and letter in February of the application year. Recipients of the Legacy Transfer, Amos (SBA), Yatooma (SECS) and Returning Alumni Awards will be notified by phone and letter in April. All other applicants will be notified via email after all recipients for that award have been contacted. Also, a list of recipients will be posted in the scholarship section of the OUAA website.

I received an OUAA scholarship in the past. Can I re-apply for the coming academic year?
Previous OUAA scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply for another OUAA scholarship.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship?
Yes, you may apply for any scholarships for which you qualify; however, you will not receive more than one scholarship from the OUAA.

What criteria does the selection committee most use in deciding on a worthy candidate?
All criteria are used in the selection process. No one piece of information has greater value over another.

When can I expect to receive the funds if I am selected to receive a scholarship?
Scholarships are distributed directly into your student account at the start of the fall and winter semesters of the award academic year as long as all criteria are met. OUAA scholarships may be applied toward "cost of attendance" at OU.

What if I am dual enrolled at OU and at one of the participating Michigan community colleges. Am I eligible to receive an OUAA scholarship?
Yes, you can apply for any of the OUAA scholarships for which you qualify, but you will have to attend OU for the fall and winter semesters when the award will be distributed.
