Student Scholarships
Through the Oakland University Alumni Association (OUAA) Scholarship Program, more and more students are able to achieve their dream of pursuing an OU degree.

To date, the OUAA has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to qualified OU students. The money for these scholarships is provided through generous donations and revenue earned from OUAA events and programs. In 2012 alone, the OUAA awarded $57,000 in scholarships to 20 OU students. View past student scholarship recipients.

Application deadline for the 2013-14 awards was March 1, 2013. The scholarship selection committee is currently reviewing submitted application forms.

Who should I ask to write my letters of recommendation?
Select two individuals to complete the recommendation form attached to the application and provide a letter of recommendation. If you are a current OU student, one letter MUST come from an OU faculty member. Transfer students may use a faculty member from the previous institution. If you are a current high school senior applying for a Legacy Scholarship, one of your letters MUST come from one of your high school teachers.

The application states to submit two letters of recommendation. If I send more than two, will that be viewed more favorably by the selection committee?
Only two letters of recommendation will be considered for each applicant. Choose the supporting documentation that best represents you to the selection committee.

How should I package my application?
Do not use special packaging such as notebooks, sheet protectors, title pages, special bindings, or any other items to organize or market your application. Paper clips are preferred over staples. The materials need to be presented with minimal distraction as we scan the documents for electronic distribution to the selection committee.

I am a transfer student. Can I still apply for an OUAA scholarship?
Yes, as long as you have completed at least one semester at OU by the time of the scholarship distribution and meet the criteria for the scholarship you are applying for.  All transfer students, without an established OU GPA, must provide a transcript from the previous institution(s) providing GPA information.

I am an international student. Can I still apply for an OUAA scholarship?
Yes, as long as you meet all other criteria.

When will the applications be available?
Applications are available online in writable pdf format at the start of the winter semester each year. Visit our scholarship webpage for more information.

Are the OUAA scholarships renewable?
All of the OUAA scholarships offered on our website are non-renewable.

How do I know if I have major standing?
Some majors need only be declared, whereas others require admission. It’s best to check with your academic adviser if you are unsure as to whether you have major standing in your program.

Who is eligible to apply for the Legacy Scholarship?
High School seniors or current OU freshmen whose parent(s)or grandparent(s) is a graduate of OU are eligible to apply for the Legacy Scholarship.

Can my scholarship be used towards the spring/summer semester?
No, all OUAA scholarships are distributed over the fall and winter semesters.

I only have one semester remaining in my degree program. Can I still be considered for the award?
Yes, however, should you be selected your award would only be distributed in the amount for one semester. In other words, you would receive half of the award.

When will I know if I am selected to receive a scholarship?
Recipients will be notified by phone and letter in April of the application year. All other applicants will be notified via email after all recipients have been contacted. Also, look for a list of recipients in the scholarship section of the OUAA website.

I received an OUAA scholarship in the past. Can I re-apply for the coming academic year?
Previous OUAA scholarship recipients are not eligible to receive another OUAA scholarship.

If I am awarded a scholarship, can the funds be used for my study abroad trip?
No, but the OUAA does offer scholarships specifically designated for study abroad. Applications can be found on the international education page of the OU website. Click here for more information.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship?
Yes, you may apply for any scholarships for which you qualify; however, you will not receive more than one scholarship from the OUAA.

What criteria does the selection committee most use in deciding on a worthy candidate?
All criteria are used in the selection process. No one piece of information has greater value over another.

When can I expect to receive the funds if I am selected to receive a scholarship?
Scholarships are distributed directly into your student account at the start of the fall and winter semesters of the award academic year as long as all criteria are met. OUAA scholarships are for tuition only.

What if I am dual enrolled at OU and at one of the participating Michigan community colleges.  Am I eligible to receive an OUAA Scholarship?
Yes, you can apply for any of the OUAA scholarships for which you qualify, but you will have to attend OU for the fall and winter semesters when the award will be distributed.
